File your Income Tax Returns before end of August

Step 1: Get hold of your Form 16

Form 16 is a certificate your employer gives you when the TDS deducted on your salary is certified. Form 16 has most of the information you need to fill in your return. PAN and TAN details of your employer, name and address of your employer and similar details for you are mentioned which have to be filled in the return. You will see a number which is your 'total taxable salary' and that is the number you will have to pick to submit under the head salary in your return. Step 2: Find out your income other than salary

Most of us earn a savings bank account interest or have some fixed deposits put away. This interest earned has to be added to your return under income from other sources. If you have any other bonds you subscribed to, where interest is accumulated, add this interest to your return. If you have taken a home loan to own a house and you live in that house, you get a deduction for the interest for the financial year. The interest amount is your loss, which will get adjusted against your salary and other income. If you have rented out your house, the rental income is offered for tax. You can deduct property taxes paid by you and a standard 30 per cent from the net amount (rental income less property taxes) is also allowed. For a rented property the entire interest on home loan is deductible. You'll also need to provide details of the property, address, date of construction, information about co-owners etc.

Are Airtel and Vodafone India 3G dongles injecting Javascript and iFRAMEs into your web browsing ?

In what is essentially a Man-in-the-Middle type of "hacking" attack, 3G dongle users of Airtel and Vodafone in India(Update: other countries have also reported similar issues it seems) are being given modified webpages injected with a hidden Javascript code.

Airtel was previously in the new in India for trying to bypass NetNeutrality but backtracked after public opinion. This, however, did not prevent them from increasing the costs of mobile internet packs in India.

A few days back, Thejesh GN, or Thej as he likes to be called, discovered a suspicious javascript when he was browsing his own website Thej.in Since it was his own site, he was sure that he did not put it there. What was happening was that when the website was being delivered to his computer over his Airtel 3G Dongle, an extra line was added(which is one method how China hacked Google account of their citizens).

This line loaded an external javascript file from an IP address :

http://223.224.131.144/scripts/Anchor.js

Update : Vodafone uses the similar  http://1.2.3.4/bmi-int-js/bmi.js

The javascipt file is unreachable right now. Maybe they allow only Airtel(or Vodafone) 3G IPs to access it Or maybe they removed the file.

Travelling by train in India is a unique experience. Indian railways is one of the largest emplyers in Asia with thousands of people running the show. But the website for booking Indian train tickets is still not good enough. In fact, the current edition of the website is the best it has ever become, the earlier website was so hopelessly difficult to navigate and always slow.

Indian railways always gets overbooked and many people cancel their tickets, allowing those in the waiting list to get confirmed tickets. But playing this game of lottery to get tickets is not an option for most people.

Here are two websites(not run by the Indian railways), made by smart Indian youth which predict whether your ticket will become confirmed by the date of your train journey.

One is TrainMan.in , made by an IIT Roorkee graduate, Amir Mohammad. He made the website collect data from IRCTC on ticket status and later confirmation status and using this data, the website does statistical analysis to predict your chances of getting a confirmation of your ticket.

Its algorithm can predict your likelihood of getting a confirmed ticket. Amir claims his predictions have an 85% accuracy record.

The Maggi noodles issue has been kicking up a storm in India.
Initially, last week the Uttar Pradesh FDA first said that there was excessive lead and monosodium glutamate in Maggi. Soon news came that they had issued a ban on Maggi.

Later the news came that there was no ban on Maggi and it was just a rumour.

Another report said that Maharashtra FDA has also taken Maggi samples to test.

Although the food and drug administration (FDA) of Uttar Pradesh has claimed that the content of lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG) in a batch of ready-to-cook Maggi was high, the Maharashtra state unit of the FDA plans to verify the claims, before taking a drastic step such as recalling the product from the market.
“We have collected samples of the product from different parts of the state such as Pune, Nagpur and Mumbai and have sent them to our laboratory for tests. The results will come in a couple of days, after which we will decide if there is a need to take action,” said Dr Harshdeep Kamble, state FDA commissioner.
According to Nestle India, on April 30, the local authorities in Lucknow asked them to recall one batch of Maggi Noodles (around 200,000 packs) which were manufactured in February 2014 and had crossed the expiry date in November 2014.
The company, in a press statement, said, “Nestlé India’s current practice is to collect stock that is near the best before date from distributors/retailers, so we are confident that these packs are no longer in the market. The company does not agree with the order and is filing the requisite representations with the authorities.”

Then came the issue of celebrities who endorsed Maggi earlier being told there will be an FIR against them.

“Any brand ambassador or celebrity endorsing products or services is liable for action if an advertisement is found misleading, the government said on Monday. It said celebrities like Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta are legally responsible, if the advertisements for the popular Maggi noodles were found to be misleading consumers. According to the Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) Act, anyone who is a party to a misleading advertisement or its publication can be fined up to Rs 10 lakh. The proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection Act also has provisions to issue direction for discontinuation of such advertisements and even reporting such violations to police or any other law enforcing agency for criminal prosecution,” says a report in the Times of India.

Nestle said that there was some lead in a packet of Maggi that had expiry date of November 2014 and that batch is not in the market anymore.

Is there lead in MAGGI Noodles?
