Which Amazon Kindle device should I buy in India ?

If you are an avid reader, there comes a time when you decide to go for an eBook reader. There is a limit to how many paper books we can buy or even borrow. Many of us make do with mobiles and tablets as eReaders, but the eyestrain is very much present, even if we don't notice it immediately.

Among the eBook readers, Amazon Kindle is the best in terms of popularity, reach and accessibility at present. Many others like Nook and Koobo readers are available, but none can stand up to Amazon.

Kindles are basically eInk devices which means their screens use power ONLY when changing what is displayed. Once it displays something, it stays there and the power consumption drops to near absolute 0.

Of course, there are LCD Kindle Fires too, but that would come under the category of tablets.

Let us talk about Kindles based on eInk for now.

Whispernet

Amazon’s Whispernet is a 3G wireless plan provided by the company, free of charge. To access Whispernet from a Kindle with the proper hardware, turn on the wireless option in the device’s menu. In India, Vodafone provides the connection for the Whispernet service, so you should be able to receive a signal anywhere within Vodafone’s coverage area. Once connected, you can browse the Amazon store, purchase and download books directly via 1-click, and access Web content.

Whispersync

Whispernet also features Whispersync, the ability to update books and other content between devices automatically. Whispersync tracks the pages of an e-book as you read them, and updates bookmarks on all your devices simultaneously. If you read the first three chapters of an e-book at your PC and then switch to your Kindle to read while traveling, it will automatically open the book at the fourth chapter so you can pick up where you left off. Whispersync is on by default in all new Kindles, but you can turn off the option on individual devices if you have multiple readers attached to your account.

But Whispernet is not always reliable, it is only as good as Vodafon'e coverage. If you want to buy a cheaper WiFi-only Kindle, just make sure that you have a WiFi hotspot for downloading books or browsing. But you can make a WiFi hotspot with a regular Android phone for free. Or with a regular Windows Laptop using Connectify-free.

Hope this will help make your decision easier.
